General Program

The Club Sailing Program for the next year commences late April with club events starting promptly at 10:30 AM last race to finish before 2:30 pm

Sailing will be conducted at Woorabinda Lake, Mabel St Stirling

Sailing every Wednesday with handicap racing on the last Wed of the month and Championship Racing on the other days.  The club also runs a match racing event in early December and an Interclub event late September.  We break for Christmas for 3 weeks.

Social sailing is available to members every Sunday morning 8.00 to 12.00am

All state events can be seen on the SARYA web site

There was a late start because David L was still having issues with his F5. Ben and Mal tried to sort it out but  with no luck. So back to the drawing board. David L. sailed the club boat after lunch    and managed to get a few races in by the end of the day. Very light breezes made "races" take a long time to complete and we only managed 7 races in all for the day.

The AGM was a good night with everyone enjoying the meal and the company. Even though we had rain in the last week, it made little difference to the level of water in the lake. Dave N, with waders on, came to the rescue of 3 boats stuck in the mud. It was a bit of a "Domino" affect with 1 boat getting stuck, another getting stuck trying to help and then another getting stuck trying to help the other 2. Dave L. started well but had to withdraw due to possible battery issues. The day was freezing, so Winter is definitely upon us, but we all had a good time with 11 races in all.

What an  enjoyable day we all had handicap racing, with 6 skippers going at their best to improve   their position on the ranking for each race. The  opportunity also arose for some to start in 7th, 8th or 9th position and make their way to the front of the fleet. This became a real challenge for them. Coming 3rd in race 6 was a  highlight for David L and he was rapped.But this didn't last long because he ended up in the reeds towards the end of the day. So out came the dingy for a rescue. And at the same time we were able to organise the submerged tree limb problem to an extent. Thanks to David N for a great lunch. The hot hot dogs were very welcome on such a cold day. Sailing on the lake these days is pretty challenging. It's like a box of chocolates "you never know what you are going to get". Notwithstanding the weather conditions, and the lack of water in the lake, the submerged tree branches have created a real headache for us. At least 5 yachts got caught on them with 1 yacht unfortunately getting caught 4 times in 1 race. All these problems will disappear when we get some rain. Numbers for the AGM have been finalised and  we can look forward to a good night on May 29th at 6.00pm at the Bridgewater Hotel.

David L our latest member arrived with his newly purchased F5 full of enthusiasm and raring to go. John was again our good Samaritan working with waders on launching and retrieving our boats from the lake which  is still in desperate need of some rain. Thank you John. There hasn't been a day when we have a constant breeze lately. It seems to come and go. Next week final numbers are required for our AGM on the 29th May 6.00pm at the Bridgewater Hotel.

The start was cold and wet. And it was a non event because 4 boats were stuck in the shallows even before the first countdown. Still, we were dry and out of the rain under cover. We decided to skip morning tea and race on through to our lunch break. The conditions were light with the occasional gust keeping us on our toes. Steve had numerous buoy encounters. Ben had the invisible sunken limb in the middle of the lake catching him out too. John had brought his waders and saved the day with launching and retrieving any boats that needed help. Thanks John. Well that's it from the lake today. 3 weeks until our AGM. We need to confirm all numbers by May 21st.

Dave N became the number one man in demand on the day. Because of the state of the lake, Dave N with gumboots on and  full of water,  struggled to launch and retrieve member's yachts without a complaint. Thank you Dave N. What a great effort.  Dave K cooked a hot lunch and the hamburgers were delicious and very welcome. Handicap day gives everyone the opportunity to better their scores and take on the challenge of being a winner. With the water level of the lake being so low, the submerged trees are becoming a real hazard and 3 of us ended up having g keel stopping experience. Still, we all managed to complete 12 races. Well done everyone. The AGM is now only 4 weeks away.

Mal helped Duncan with his electronics before racing commenced. They are all sorted now. Dave N brought his son along and he had a great time sailing the club boat. It was the closest racing ever today and all the boats would have fitted on a plate. It was something spectacular to see. School holidays brought out many spectators, children, grand parents and couples some of whom made comments on how they were enjoying the racing on the lake. It made for a great atmosphere. Next week is handicap day with a BBQ for lunch. Bring along your $3.50. Slight increase because of costs. 5 weeks to the AGM to be held at the Bridgewater Hotel on Thursday MAY 29th at 6.00pm.Please let me know if you are coming. Need to know numbers!! Steve

It was a better day this week with a light breeze and the occasional gust. With 10 boats on the "water" , it was a good sign for the club's continuing progress with the return of the new sailors David and Bernie. Well done!  Ben spent time with Duncan setting up his new transmitter and receiver with some success. Now to racing with 5 different skippers taking line honours. But the rest of the skippers had a battle pushing each other in close quarters to be the next over the line. David K was the only rescue required by dingy because his boat ran out of power. Our AGM is coming up soon. Only 6 weeks away on Thursday 29th May at 6.00 pm at the Bridgewater Hotel. Partners are also more than  welcome. So please take note of the date and keep it free. Results for Wednesday 9th April.rain! Well more like drizzle. So up went our marquee. It is always so good to have the comfort of dry sailing conditions. Race 1 turned out to be no race at all because there was no wind. Then disaster struck when Rob lost rudder control and floated off into the reeds, and  Mal ended up there too. Geoff had problems causing him to snag other yachts and Dave N had to wade into the lake to retrieve his yacht which was stuck in the mud, even with a short keel. Out came the rescue boat which in the end was of no use because it had problems with the drive shaft. The dingy saved the day. The rest of the yachts just floated around while this was all happening. So that was the first race which was abandoned and the last for the day. We decided to call the whole day a non event. I can't ever remember a day like this happening before.

Good days racing with multiple winners. Two potential new members had a sail, welcome Bernie and David. Rob had steerage problems, these always seem to happen to him when he is in a good position in tbe race. Weather was good.  What can l say a good day was had by all.  (Report by David K)

For our Handicap Day this month we experienced light winds with regular wind direct changes making it challenging. Ducan's sailing is improving this week, he completed all ten races. Mal tried out his new short fin with a 1kg lighter bulb, requiring a few adjustments to handle the new setup.

A day of lots of "groundings" when launching and retrieving, not to mention the hang-ups from the sunken trees as the lake keeps on receding. Mal is back on track with the F6 problem almost sorted thanks to  help from Allan Gold. The day went well and we started on time for a change with everyone smiling. Close racing all day with 4 wide rounding the last mark and then finishing within millimeters of each other across the line, for most races in the afternoon.

"Duncan's boat," well, it is slowly coming together. The biggest surprise though, was  that the lake definitely looks more like a pond, and not the lake that we are use to. Hopefully it will rain again, and soon.

Mal has had a bit of bad luck with his new F6 which is having all sorts of problems and the list is getting longer. Hopefully it will be back in top condition soon, when it is all sorted. "Keep up the good work Mal". Racing commenced on time, well all most. The majority of skippers enjoyed the light conditions, but the occasional gusts did frustrate everyone. At lunch we discussed the details of our up and coming AGM. It was decided to make a tentative booking for May 29th at 6.00pm at the Bridgewater Hotel for all members and their partners.

Duncan's boat needed more work sorting out the electrical problems   caused by the extensive water damage and lack of maintenance done on the boat to solve it's many problems. So Mal assisted by Steve, set to work. Firstly the other A rig needed to be fixed so a sail set could be achieved. Then the rudder servo which  was not working because all the points of contact terminals were corroded by the moisture in the boat. Ben came to the rescue with a new extension lead from receiver to servo and "bingo", everything worked.

So sailing started late and not before Dave N with wellies on, cleared a trench for launching and retrieving  boats from the ramp because the level of the  lake had receded even more. This also caused lots of problems with the boats grounding. Huge gusts saw boats out of control, in the reeds, and hooked on buoys. Needless to say that it was a very eventful day. Looking forward to next week's challenges.

It was an eventful day for Steve because he sailed for the first time using his newly acquired short keel with remarkable results. Well done. Mal is still waiting for his short keel and hopefully it should be arriving soon. After having a tasty hamburger for lunch we were back into it but with a diminished fleet because Wayne's boat filled up with water after a disastrous launch which left it with a split in the hull by the transom. It was a long day with 15 races completed by only 2 skippers in the end. And the lake is getting lower and lower. We might have a beach party next week so bring your thongs and  umbrellas.

An early start to the day with the launch of Duncan's boat, which has had all the leaks fixed thanks to Allan Gold. Mal, Dave N and Steve set the rig up for Duncan and came to the decision that one of the A Rigs that he used  was an absolute wreck and needed to be binned. Next week we will try the other one, hopefully with much more success. Dave K packed it in after his first race and helped Duncan sail for the rest of the day. Well done Dave K. We also had 2 members from the Adelaide Hills Council arrive to discuss the new pontoon for launching and retrieving  our boats from, that they are going to build for the club which will be a huge improvement on what we are using now. Thanks guys. The lake is getting very low and it has become difficult for long keeled boats because they are getting stuck in the mud. Well, we have to take the good with the bad. Next week is handicap day with a BBQ for lunch which is always welcomed.
