General Program

The Club Sailing Program for the next year commences late April with club events starting promptly at 10:30 AM last race to finish before 2:30 pm

Sailing will be conducted at Woorabinda Lake, Mabel St Stirling

Sailing every Wednesday with handicap racing on the last Wed of the month and Championship Racing on the other days. The club also runs a match racing event in early December and an Interclub event late September. We break for Christmas for 3 weeks.

Social sailing is available to members every Sunday morning 8.00 to 12.00am

All state events can be seen on the SARYA web site

A frustrating day of incidents 4 rescues 3 from reeds and 1 from 2 boats linked together plus 2 boat stuck in shallow water with weed tangled around the bulb. Rob was frustrated trying to improve his performance handling the windy conditions, Dave even tried his C2 rig.     We manage to repair Jeff's rudder on his boat after his tangle with John caused by a strong gust of wind. Duncan only had 2 races under guides of Marty.

Light winds made it challenging however Rob Last sailing 73 managed the condition to be the best on the day.

Well that's it for sailing for 2024. The day brought a few headaches for some. Rob had trouble with the buoys down at the far end of the course and finally his boat got hung up on one. John's winch gave up after the third race and David K had winch trouble as well but got it sorted for a while before the problem returned. With very light wind conditions we still managed 11 races. Next Wednesday the 18th December is our CHRISTMAS BREAKUP at the Bridgewater Inn at 12.00 noon. All booked so this is the last reminder. Hope to see you all there.

Despite the holes in the wind there was enough to get some exciting and close racing. David found the trip down the hill took a little longer than it used to to get the correct keel. Jeff nearly made a dinghy recovery necessary but skillfully extracted his yacht from the reeds. Michael was very pleased with his effort in the first race and was right up the front throughout the race - just wait till next time was his warning!

One more Wednesday of sailing before our Christmas lunch and break up for 2024.

Wind! There was enough wind today to last for the next two weeks of sailing. It was wild! Yes that's right. Only two more sailing days before our Christmas breakup
on Wednesday December 18th at the Bridgewater Inn at 12.00 noon. We will decide on that day the return date for 2025 (3 or 4 weeks). That is the question to be answered and voted on. The choice is yours. Thanks Dave K for the last BBQ for 2024.

Wow! What a day! Perfect conditions and a great turnout of skippers who were all searching for the perfect wind which was challenging at the best of times. One minute it was there and then it was gone. Well I suppose that it is typical of the lake conditions at Stirling. Next week will be the last handicap event and the last BBQ for the year. Yes Rob's mate Mike did turn up to sail his boat this week. And Rob' s day started with his new boat having a problem which after much discussion between us all and a lot of hull banging which   didn't work, the saga continued with Mal trying his best to assist as it was his old F3. But with no success. So Rob will work on it during the week ready for sailing next Wednesday. Now to sailing. We started with 10 skippers and ended with 5 finishing the day's events. The lake is getting shallower by the week so gumboots are required for launching the long keeled yachts until the ramp is totally exposed and dry. Hope to see everyone next week with all problems sorted. Remember that there is only 4 racing days left before our Christmas break. So let's make the most of them to end the year on a high.

The day started off as a working bee with Malcolm coming totally organised with a rake, waders and so we started to clean the edge of the lake of weeds rocks, branches and sunken logs. So the day's racing started later and 7 races was all we could fit in. We also required the use of the rescue boat for 2 recoveries. Rob brought a friend who came along and sailed the club boat. There is a good chance we might possibly acquire a new member. Don't forget, 18th December is the Christmas breakup at the Bridgewater Inn at 12.00. Put it in your diary.

Another day at the lake with 6 different skippers taking line honours. So everyone was stoked. Handicapping is working well. There were lots of interested sight seers stopping and taking the time to enjoy the racing yachts. Some even stayed for a chat. A lovely day was had by all and the BBQ lunch capped it off nicely. Thanks Dave. Xmas Breakup Lunch is to be held on Wed Dec 18th at 12.00 at the Bridgewater Inn so no racing that day as it is the last Wed before Santa comes. We will resume after a (3 week?) break on Wed Jan 8th 2025.

14 races. Now that makes for a full day on the water doing what we all enjoy most. The competition was close and each race showed how everyone has stepped up to another level which is great to see. Next week is handicap day with a BBQ for lunch.

Malcom's new F6 was launched today (without the champagne).Rob is now the proud new owner of Mal's F3 and what an impressive day he had today. We were without wind for most of the races which made for very slow progress around the course. Very testing on one's concentration.

Another day of pure bliss at our lake with 7 sailors trying their best to have a successful day. Perfect conditions 2 weeks in a row! Now that was a real plus. We finished the day by having a forum on sail setting, changing everything possible on Steve's boat. It will never be the same again now that everyone has had input on how to set it up. But that is what it is all about. Ideas! Ideas! Thanks everyone.

A sunny day! Hopefully that's a sign of what we can look forward to as the day was absolutely perfect in all aspects for sailing. No rescues required !! A surprise visit from Ben for 5 races topped off the day.

Mild conditions with a shower or two was the expected forecast.   So we made the decision to put up the gazebo without the walls. This was a lesson learnt and we paid for it as mild turned to wild. The rain, wind and a dramatic temperature drop closed us down for an early finish. But on a positive note handicapping is working exceptionally well with 5 different skippers winning races.

Now this is close (BenM)!! Good to see 63 back on the pond. The racing was so close this week which is reflected in the results. A late start as Geoff needed some assistance with his boat. We had no success in fixing the problem and only got 1 race in by morning tea. But the racing in the afternoon was intense to say the least. Seeing 5 wide rounding the last 2 marks neck and neck was exciting stuff. BBQ next week which tells you it's handicap day.

John's start to the day was not good as he had Gremlins in his electronics, but got it sorted and was a starter after lunch. The lake had many obstacles to manoeuvre through with everyone picking up reeds at some time during the day. Lots of enthusiasm though even with the strong conditions.

Today was like being in a revolving door for one sailor. Around and around he went caught by the same buoy not once but in two separate races. So we had to call on our SES member to rescue his boat with our dingy. Thanks Rob. With a light breeze at the start of the day we ended up with some reasonable conditions for the afternoon.

Handicap day turned out to be a bit of a disaster. The day was beautiful with the sun shining, mild temperatures, and the lake looked like a sheet of glass most of the time. Still we all persevered. Then things turned for the worse.

Ben left early, then Malcolm slipped and his transmitter ended up fully submerged in the lake. Then Wayne slipped on the pine needles and came a cropper. The rest who were left standing sailed on. The hot lunch really saved the day thanks to David K..

Unbelievable gusts from all angles all day making it impossible to predict. To control your boat became all too hard a challenge at times even for some "B" rigs. The new Gazebo was an excellent choice with plenty of room and protection from the elements. Next week is handicap day with lunch.

This week's comfort level went from zero to plus ten with the addition of the new solid walls to our existing gazebo which will be replaced with a new 4.5m x3.0m gazebo for next week's racing.( A future coffee machine and heater are on the drawing board). On the water Mal did it again with his short keel and lightweight bulb with pressure from John and Steve all day. Rob returned from his warm European trip to freezing conditions. It is good to see him back racing. Lots of laughs was enjoyed by everyone making for a great day.

Good to see No 26 back on the water again. Good for some but maybe not so good for others. The day was a tricky one because of the challenging breezes which created a lot of searching for the right angles to stay on course. It was full on but we completed 13 full races. No incidences so our new rescue boat was not required.

Wed 29 June - Sailing cancelled due to predicted inclement weather.

Sitting on the sidelines today was an easy day for scoring. If you weren't 1st you were either a 2nd or a 3rd and if you weren't 2nd   you were either a 3rd place getter or a winner. And if you weren't 3rd in the race you might have been a winner or come in 2nd. I won't say any more because you can all work it out. Our rescue boat was actually a definite winner and proved invaluable, successfully retrieving a boat so the dingy wasn't needed. Next week is handicap day with a Barby for lunch.

This week was another battle for honours with John and Malcom going head to head all day. So many close finishes with the results so hard to call as the margins were within millimeters of each other for the rest of the sailors. ( Great to watch). There was another successful trial run for our rescue boat thanks to Malcom's efforts .
The evening at the Bridgewater hotel was enjoyed by all who attended.

When you're hot you're hot (Mal) 7 wins from 9 races now that's impressive well done Malcolm. Rob challenged with 2 wins. Wayne had winch failure and retired after race 5. Dave Nic kept the pressure on the leaders all day . Tomorrow night A G M 6pm the 6th June Bridgewater hotel.

The results reflect that the handicapping worked well with very close finishes all day. It was neck and neck with 3 to 4 boats coming to the final mark pushing each other to the limit. The standard of all sailors seems to lift on handicap days and the hearty barbecue tops it off making for a great day. The 6th of June at 6pm AGM and Presentation Night at the Bridgewater Hotel. All committee positions will become vacant and all nominations will be voted on for the coming year. Of course there will be trophy presentations after the AGM. Steve (Ahhh! that looks better BenM)

The prediction from last week of light winds came to fruition but we all persevered and struggled (some more than others) through a long day. Next week is our handicap day with a barbecue for lunch.
